Why She’s a Finalist: Kaufman was never supposed to end up in Dallas. The Southern Californian comes from a long line of USC Trojans, and she had every intention of going there herself. She doesn’t even remember why she applied to SMU, but once she visited the school—just for kicks—she was sold on the school and the city. And she hasn’t left since graduating four years ago. “There are so many opportunities for success here,” she says. “This city is growing so much. It’s really exciting.” After a stint at People Newspapers as the society editor, she moved on to greener pastures—literally—as the outreach coordinator at the Trinity Trust. She’s become passionate about the project and spends her days fundraising, giving presentations, and anything else she can to further the cause. When she’s not saving the Trinity, she likes to hike in the Trinity Forest, walk on the Katy Trail, and dine at Javier’s. Warning: when Kaufman gets nervous, she tap dances.
