How We Picked the Finalists:

We solicited nominations through www.dmagazine.com, plus we threw in our own candidates. After looking through hundreds of nominations, the D Magazine editors narrowed down the pool to 25 semi-finalists. We brought them in for face-to-face interviews, then narrowed down the list to the 20 finalists you see here.

Beatris Martinez

Name: Beatris Martinez
Age: 29
Occupation: Assistant Principal

Why She’s a Finalist: Martinez leads a very busy life. She’s a mother to a 9-year-old; she is an assistant principal in Garland ISD; and she is pursuing her Ph.D. in education. While any one of those things would tire out the average woman, Martinez also manages to volunteer. The Dallas native works with New Beginnings Center, which helps women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. She also mentors kids at Garland’s First Hispanic Assemblies of God Church, works with Richland College to provide education opportunities to those in need, and more. When she has a spare moment, she enjoys going out for Thai food, scrapbooking, and “brainstorming the specifics of a cosmetic line she hopes to launch in the near future.” When will she ever find the time?
