We solicited nominations through www.dmagazine.com, plus we threw in our own candidates. After looking through hundreds of nominations, and interviewing dozens of women, D Magazine editors narrowed the pool down to 20 semifinalists.

Why She's a Semifinalist:Carol’s good at posing for photos, but what she really likes about her gig as a model is the travel. (Hey, it’s no picnic watching your weight when you’re a food lover, she says.) Her passion for seeing the world is no surprise. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela (her first language was Spanish); her father has family roots across Latin America; and her mother is Czech and German. Her two favorite things to eat are her grandmother’s Venezuelan arepas and her father’s dish of shredded red meat with flantas and black beans and rice. But as much as she loves to be abroad, she’s happiest when she’s simply with her husband David and daughter Addison Rose, whom she calls “my heart.”
